GOLD Manga – A Short Review

First of all, congratulations to my friends and fellow artists, Enjelicious, Jeff Nice, and their authors, Alyloony, Aril Diane, HaveYouSeenThisGirl, and A.B. Castueras! The manga looks very good, and I also found the stories to be quite interesting! I’ll definitely look forward to the second volume!

I promised them that I’d write a review, so… here goes!

Nine Stars | written by: Alyloony | illustrated by: Enjelicious

This might be my favorite story in the anthology. I found Claire to be very cute both in the way she looks and her overall personality. I might actually start counting nine stars for nine straight nights… maybe I will have my wish granted too.

I’m hoping there will be a continuation, since I want to know more about Claire, but the story ended nicely anyway. Alyloony is easily becoming one of my favorite authors.

Superstar | written by: Aril Diane | illustrated by: Jeff Nice

This definitely had a Korean drama / Kpop feel to it (and knowing Aril, it’s no wonder). This story is also short and sweet, and had a good enough ending to give me a bit of closure. I’m not too fond of Chris, who I admit, had all the right intentions, but… argh! He’s just so frustrating! But he did make a great comeback in the very end. I have to commend Jeff for that last page’s illustration because that was really effective!

Waiting for the Train | written by: HaveYouSeenThisGirl | illustrated by: Enjelicious

I’m a bit biased since I’m a fan of HYSTGS and Enjelicious but… REALLY?! DID IT HAVE TO END THAT WAY??? REALLY???!?! I wanted to throw the book for making me feel all these EMOTIONAL KNOTS but… argh…

Putting that aside, this was another good, one-shot story that has unexpected twists. Just one thing: I’m not really sure why Train Girl had to narrate the three things the train did to her before it was shown in the manga itself. It felt a bit redundant, but it’s completely minor, since it did set up the story very nicely.

Once Upon a Time | written by: A.B. Castueras | illustrated by: Jeff Nice

This is the only one that had a “to be continued” at the very end. Looking good so far! I love Skye very much, because if I wasn’t an artist, I’d be a police officer.

No, seriously.

I’m a little confused, though. Why take away the guy’s bed? That’s an absolute no-no in my book! (Unless I’m running after a deadline, well…) He went on a date like his sister asked, so why punish the guy? Also, that trip feels like it came out of no where.

Then again, there was this:

And that really disrupted the pacing.

Overall, the manga was a good buy, and I’ll be eagerly waiting for the second volume.

However, on a side note, the event I went to just to get the first release of this book was… not such a good experience.

I had arrived early (around 10:30 am), but the line for book purchasing was near horrifying by the time. With my ticket number as my queue, I had to wait nearly 5 hours just to buy the books.

Given the popularity of the authors under PSICOM, I don’t understand why they didn’t set up more counters to accommodate more people, quickly as easily. I’m pretty sure there were many who just wanted to buy the books, since the autograph event started much later, but I guess this was a marketing strategy (or they really didn’t think there’d be such a huge turnout).

Plus, the venue was uncomfortably hot.

I think I may be getting old… conventions like these are just too much for me to handle now. Next time? I’m waiting for the store release… Sorry guys… I love you and all, but I’m getting way too old for this. m(_ _)m

Angels’ Conversation

I could actually imagine this title having a crossover story with Mark 9 Verse 47, since they have the same mood.

Excerpt from Miss Joanah’s “Indie Thang: Komikon 2011 (part 3)”

That got me interested. I’ve always loved stories that involved angels, may it be fiction or non-fiction. So I hunted around Komikon, and after a couple of hasty passes, I finally gathered up the courage to approach Miss Tepai and buy her books.

Miss Joanah was right. I can easily imagine Visdei being visited by one of KARMA’s angels… I’d bet Rei would be very protective of him, even if Visdei doesn’t want anyone to “mother hen” him. (*≧▽≦)ﾉｼ))

I was thinking about drawing a very annoyed Visdei with Rei, but then I saw Michael, and another idea came to me: If Dominic were to listen to anyone aside from God, it would be Michael. And then, I found this, and inspiration took over.

I wonder what they could be talking about? ヾ(^ω^★)ノ

I’m still worried about Michael’s colors, but oh well, c’est la vie! I just hope I didn’t ruin him! ヽ(*≧ω≦)ﾉ

Manga Reviews 04.16.13

It appears to be the in thing now-a-days to write about the manga you purchase, especially when it’s a independently published comic. So before I dive back into the corporate world, I guess I could tell you about the manga I bought last Summer Komikon 2013.

This is going to be more than a little long, so I’ll highlight each title that I review to make things easier for both the readers and the creators who are curious to see what I think~

Looking for a Better Girlfriend by Enjelicious is a nice spinoff from her main series, Looking for a Better Boyfriend. Here, we meet Theo, a short-tempered boy who actually wants to makes friends but always says the exact opposite of what he wants.

It’s a good start for new series, but I have to admit, I found it very hard to read. I’m not sure if it was the copy I got, but the paper is really thin and the ink was very light! The cover is easily smudged too, so I think I may need to wait for the webcomic version when I decide to re-read this series, but I do like how it’s going so far! The characters are all very interesting and I’m definitely going to watch out for more! Congrats on another successful debut, Enj!

D.Ice by Ray Magbanua starts off really well too! Our favorite blue detective’s history is finally revealed and he takes on his first case, a missing… cat?!

I’m glad this series is finally out, but I’ll admit, black ink printed on blue paper is so… painful to see. Maybe this is just me though, but the text on the articles were outlined in black too. I have weak eyes, probably… a sign of old age?! I would suggest some thick newsprint next time with some blue printed ink (risograph, probably?) to make it easier to read at a light cost and keep the blue theme! But please do choose the dark blue ink over the light blue one, ok? My eyes are killing me…

Nevertheless, text-heavy as it may be with a few grammar errors here and there, the artwork has improved significantly from the prologue! Congratulations on the indie debut, Ray! And thanks for featuring our cosplayers at Oh No! Manga! He even used the photo I took of him, Jeff, and Enj for his article~ Tee-hee~

Coin & Flour by Jayron is a very nice compilation of the first 3 chapters of the series. It’s great value for money too, since I only paid P100 for such a thick book printed in good quality paper! Things are really getting interesting in the C&F world, but I’m a little sad that some of the text was cut off at the sides of the pages. I hope the next chapter comes out soon, because I’m dying to find out how that love story ends!

As for Studio 4 Eyes Volume 2, congratulations to my teammates Misaki-taichou, Suoh12, and Bascioiii for making it on time for Summer Komikon 2013! Let’s all pat ourselves on the back, and while I can’t review my own work, I can review the rest~

I Han It for Love takes a completely unexpected turn. Since I’m in charge of layouting the pages to get them ready for print, I got to read the next chapter before anyone else.

And it was in the wee hours of the morning that I stopped, looked, and re-read what had happened to our beloved student council. I can’t really tell you anything without spoiling it, but it was definitely a shock to read! Suoh maintained the quality of the artwork beautifully, but I still can’t get over how the story turned out the way it did!

Confusing? Maybe, but now I want to bug the team to release Volume 3 in time for Indieket just to know what happens next!

Team Gemini sat this issue out, but Taichou managed to secure a guest comic, Valkyrie Crossing by Jackie. While paneling and artwork does need some improvements, the creepy little creatures do spark a bit of interest. I’m extremely picky about art styles, but I honestly do think that out of the 7 pages I’ve seen, the story may have a lot of potential too.

Shortcuts with Jeff, Enjelia, and Jayron

Some of my friends have put together a small compilation of love stories under Black Ink’s “Shortcuts”! I’ve been looking for it ever since I heard about it and I was finally able to buy a copy the other day! ヘ(￣ω￣ヘ)

Jeff suggested I should take a photo of their book with mine, and I was more than happy to oblige! But our book is only a xerox-type! ヾ(*д*)ﾉ゛ Uhuhuhu~

The three love stories are all one shots, so you don’t need to worry and fret over when the next installment would come out (so they say, but I do want to see more from them! щ(ಥДಥщ)) I would suggest to pick it up yourself instead of reading my review, but if you’re curious, here’s a short description~ And I’ll do my best not to give anything away! （⌒▽⌒ゞ

• Some Sweat, Some Love by Nald and Jeff is about a chubby girl who wants to slim down to get the boy of her dreams. Will she succeed, or will her love of good food conquer all?
• A Decade of Waiting by Herbs and Enjelia tells about a young boy who wishes to become the best so that he would be good enough to be the boyfriend of the girl of his dreams. But after working so hard for the past decade, will she even notice his efforts?
• The Tree of Happy Leaves by Ron and Jason (huh? Jason not Jayron?!) is the story of a girl who likes a boy who has been ignoring her forever. One day, a golden leaf fall on her head which reminded her about the Tree of Happy Leaves. Could a little, dried up leaf, really bring happiness to a girl’s longing heart?

Honestly, I don’t like shoujo very much. This coming from a girl who’s writing and drawing a shoujo manga herself! o(>< )o But after I’ve read all three shorts, it kinda made me feel like I wanted to fall in love some day too~ ♥（ﾉ´∀`）

Then again, I think I should be focusing more on drawing new pages for Crystal Shadows and preparing for the next Komikon! (,,#ﾟДﾟ)

In any case, please pick up this book! (≧▼≦；) It’s only P69.75, so you really get your money’s worth! I mean, a good fluffy story is so hard to find these days, and with this book, you get three! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ) ♫･*:.｡. .｡.:*･ It’s happiness in a book!

A.illusions’ and Karma’s First Review

I gotta admit, after I saw that this guy was reviewing Oh No! Manga titles, I couldn’t wait to see what he would say about my book. (*ノ・ω・)

I’ve been getting a lot of mixed feedback with this book. Some people like A.illusions better while others like Benedict here prefer Karma. (,,#ﾟДﾟ) I don’t think I can draw both series at the same time, but ahaha… what to do… o(~>.<)o
