Gift: 100

You guys have absolutely no idea how happy this makes me, even if my character is such a tiny little thing in this illustration! (*≧▽≦)

You see, back in 2007, I joined a contest hosted by Apricot8585’s fan club. All participant will get to have their character drawn by the artist, but the top three will be drawn much larger than the rest. I’m very happy to say that Eri caught Apricot’s eye, and she added Eri to her top 10 picks! ヽ(*≧ω≦)ノ Sadly, I didn’t get enough votes, and I only ranked 6th or 7th at the end of the contest, but I’m still happy Eri is in here! (。´∀`)ノ

I had lost my copy of this art until recently, so I guess we can say this is a Throwback Thursday? Goth Eri is one of the most viewed illustrations in my Deviant Art, and you can find the original illustration here. In Apricot’s work, you will find her sitting on a cloud on the upper right corner. 。◕‿◕。

If anyone here happens to know where Apricot has gone off to on the internet, please let me know, thank you! ヾ(^ ^ゞ

Jeremy (Crystal Shadows) in KARMA: Chapter 3

“Did you know that Jeremy Chan is actually one of the main characters in ‘Crystal Shadows’? And that he guest stared in KARMA: Chapter 3?” ヽ(・ω・ゞ)

Ok, so my announcement is extremely late, but hey, better late than never? No?

Anyway, if you haven’t noticed it yet, KARMA features a bunch of my original characters from several different series. For Chapter 3, I decided to write a story about doctors, and Jeremy seemed like the perfect candidate to crossover into the world of KARMA. ヾ(*´∇`)ノ

The events in Chapter 3 occurs several years after Crystal Shadows, where Jeremy is now studying to become a doctor, and one of his first assignments is to volunteer at the People’s Hospital of New Manila. Once there he unknowingly meets two angels, and a little girl that will change his life forever.

Chapter 3 was supposed to be a 2-part story, but seeing how popular it is, I might just have to write an epilogue for the 3rd issue of the Oh No! Manga Anthology. ☆* o(≧▽≦)o *☆

How I Draw: Anatomy Tips on Drawing Arms

To be honest, I didn’t think there’d be a lot of people who’d be interested in learning how I draw, but I’ve received a lot of requests to continue giving tips on anatomy and drawing in general. Thank you so much! I’m so flattered! ヽ(;▽;)ノ

Well then, let’s continue where we left off! We’ve learned from the previous lesson that a person is generally 7 heads high (see point number 2), now let’s study drawing the arms! ヽ(*≧ω≦)ノ

a.illusions / vocaloid - tori avalon kaito

The elbows are actually aligned somewhere along the waistline when they are placed on either side of your body. You can check this yourself when you stand in front of a full-length mirror. And when I say waist, I mean your upper waistline, not where low-rise jeans usually sit on your torso! o(-`д´- 。) Tori is wearing low-rise jeans in the diagram, but his elbows are above that point! (。・ω・。)

a.illusions - khyle

Similarly, when your arms are straight down on either side of your body, the tip of your open hand falls halfway of your upper thigh. Khyle’s right arm is closed in a loose fist so this might not be the best example, but I hope you can see what I mean! ( (ミ´ω`ミ))

This is of course, only a rough estimate, and since anime does not follow any set of rules regarding anatomy, your character may have shorter or longer arms. Either way, I use these tips so that the arms don’t end up looking too short or too long. ☆ミ(o*・ω・)ノ

I hope this tutorial was helpful to you! ヾ(^ ^ゞ Feel free to post your questions in the comments section and I’ll do my best to answer them! (*≧▽≦) Oh, and if you’d like to learn about anything specific, please do let me know! (*´・v・)

The Many "Yukee"s of Honey

Santa knows I’ve been good this year which is probably why I received my Christmas presents early! (≧▼≦;)

~Originally from here and here~

Honey Den seems to have taken a liking to Yukee! (⌒▽⌒ゞ Just look at these gorgeous portraits! And the priestess one is colored traditionally too! How awesome is that?! ヽ(≧∇≦)ノ

Ayiii~ Thank you so much once again! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ) ♫・*:.。. .。.:*・ I will add these to the gallery page once I’m done with the Christmas celebrations! I’m already so sleepy as it is, but hey! Oh No! Manga at Iloilo Comic Con ♥

I don’t usually post photo of my manga by other people in this blog, but I really had to share this one in particular~ ☆ミ(o*・ω・)ノ

This was taken by Comeec at the Iloilo Comic Con a few days ago. And look at the perfect timing! Someone was checking out my book! ♪(┌・。・)┌ Who are you, stranger with a beautiful hand? o(^^o)

And it gets me wondering, did they like it enough to buy the book? Or did they think it wasn’t worth their well-earned moonies? Or maybe they were just passing by and really bored and…

Ok, I’m over thinking this, but yey~ Thanks for taking the photo! ~(^з^)-☆ And if you want to see other fans’ photos of my books, check out the album on Facebook!

The 8th Philippine Komikon: Aftermath

ANNOUNCEMENT: If you have any information regarding the theft of Ms. Alexa’s bag and Doc Carlo’s DSLR, please do not hesitate to contact Thank you!

Another Komikon has come and gone, and this marks the second time that I was able to participate as a seller thanks to the amazing Raykosen and Studio 4 Eyes! O(≧∇≦)O

As I mentioned before, Crystal Shadows has officially launched under Studio 4 Eyes with the main characters on the cover! It’s too bad we didn’t know exactly how and where we can print colored covers without burning a hole in our Editor’s pockets, but hey, we actually managed to sell all the copies! How cool is that?! ヽ(;▽;)ノ

Gift: A.I. Rei by Android Rose

I’m feeling really spoiled with all this love. And how much Android Rose has improved is amazing! ヾ(≧∇≦)ノ Just look at that pretty smile!

For those who haven’t guessed yet, Android Rose used the name Marigold Sunset on Deviant Art before. She was one of the first few people who drew Rei when A.illusions premiered online. I still have her work here in case you’re curious.

Thank you again, Adi! This was such a nice thing to wake up to~ ヽ(;▽;)ノ

How I Draw: Basic Structure

There have been some requests on my “lessons” from the Oh No! Manga Cosplay Camp 2012. (*ノ・ω・) I think there’s a possibility that we’ll be using the slides and artworks featured for the next convention, but I’ll give you guys the very basics on how I draw. (◕‿◕✿)

  1. Stick Figure. Yes, for full body illustrations, I actually start by sketching a stick figure to make sure the character fits on the page. I don’t want to have to cut off any limbs just because I ran out of paper room. It’s a good way to get the pose right quickly or brainstorm something when I’m lacking inspiration.
  2. Anatomy Check. The average person is about 7 heads high, but what does that really mean? (」゚ペ)」Basically, you literally make an estimated measure of the character’s head, then double that measurement for the torso, upper leg, and lower leg. You don’t have to measure it with a ruler or anything crazy accurate like that! An estimate is all well and good.
  3. Figure Drawing. This is where I draw all the curves and muscles. No clothing yet (ecchi!!! ヽ(-`д´-)ノ) because that’s the only way I’ll know how the clothes would fall to the body’s shape.
  4. Inks. If I’m confident enough with how the whole thing looks, then I start inking. Nothing fancy with inking, just your basic black or brown lines.
  5. Colors. I usually do flat colors first before adding light and shadow. ~(^з^)-☆

And that’s about it! If you have any questions, feel free to comment or like and share from my Facebook Page!

Oh, and please do let me know if you find this post interesting and if you’d like to see more tutorials? ヾ(。・ω・。) I might do more if there are requests and such~ Thank you~!

A.illusions’ and Karma’s First Review

I gotta admit, after I saw that this guy was reviewing Oh No! Manga titles, I couldn’t wait to see what he would say about my book. (*ノ・ω・)

I’ve been getting a lot of mixed feedback with this book. Some people like A.illusions better while others like Benedict here prefer Karma. (,,#゚Д゚) I don’t think I can draw both series at the same time, but ahaha… what to do… o(~>.<)o

Thanks for the feedback, sir! And in case you want to see A.I.? Most of our “operations” are in private, but we’ve recently set up a blog for public viewing. ヽ(≧∇≦)ノ

Trese vs. Rei

I’m literally running around like a headless chicken with the Cosplay Camp being just one day away. ヽ(≧Д≦)ノ My insomnia’s kicking in, so I decided to draw something to make me feel sleepy…

Somehow, it ended up like this. (シ_ _)シ

I didn’t want to spend too much time drawing this especially since I still have a lot of things to prepare, so I used a reference for the background. I wanted this to be true to Trese’s style, so I used black and white with some horizontal grays.

I feel like something is lacking, but I need to stop nitpicking on this and try to get some sleep. ヘ( ̄ ̄;ヘ)

I don’t know why Trese’s so hostile towards Rei… It just came out that way… ━Σ(゚Д゚|||)━

Oh Death, Where is Thy Sting?

Ironic how I draw death when it’s the official series launch! (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ   ┻━┻

I think my brain’s been corrupted. Why am I drawing strange things like this after a long break? I do like the overall “dramatic” effect, but it just looks plain creepy!

Anyway, I hope I’ll see you guys at the launch. It’s on a Sunday, the 29th of July 2012 at the SM North Sky Dome! We’ve got a ton of prizes in store, so please pass by and meet all your favorite Oh No! Manga artists~! ヽ(・ω・ゞ)

On another note, who said blue and red can’t be used together in one scene? Break all the rules, I say, break them!

Gift: Thy Will Be Done by Suoh12

ヽ(*≧∇≦)ノ I feel as if I'm being spoiled lately with all this fanart~ Which is also very inspiring because that cosplay sword has not been making much progress lately. (;*△*;)

I have sculpting block, I suppose? ヽ(・ω・ゞ) I can see it in my head, and I think my idea will work, but I still need to translate it onto the real thing.

Oh well, back to work I go! And fanart today is brought to you by Suoh12! Thank you again so very much! I love it to bits~ ☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆

Eri by Elmer Damaso

I remember saying that I wouldn’t buy a frame for this piece, but after spotting a 13 x 17 frame colored in the same shade as Eri’s hair at National Bookstore, I knew it would be too perfect to pass up.

eri sketch by elmer damaso

With this, my entire wall of fame is in dire need of a fresh makeover. In other words, I’ll be shopping for more frames for my other pieces in the next few weeks. :3a This is going to be fun~ ♥

Black★Eri Miku

I may have gone a wee bit overboard with her pigtails. orz;;; But she’s also cosplaying Black★Rock Shooter, and she’s got some insane hair details. =u=;;;

I also has too much fun with the pleated mini skirt. I didn’t know there were much fewer pleats on Miku’s skirt, and I think there are lights on it? There are so many versions of Miku that I got dizzy looking for references. xD;;; But this was definitely a fun piece! ♥ I hope you guys like it!

By the way, Eri tore the end of her coat herself. That’s how much she hates having to cosplay. TAT;;; She’s about to shoot a fireball at me… Halp…

WIP: Black Eri Miku

I’ve been meaning to continue my Vocaloid Cosplay series (remember Khyle Gakupo and Tori Kaito?), and this has been sitting in my hard drive since… forever? =A=;;;

work in progress 2012.06.06 - eri miku

What is with that pose anyway?!

Eri is the only one who has pigtails like Hatsune Miku, but she’s so serious that being Miku doesn’t suit her at all. I was contemplating with giving her the full Black★Rock Shooter costume, but I’ve recently found out that B★RS is not Miku at all.

Well, Eri really didn’t like wearing Miku’s official costume, so I gave her B★RS’ coat to go with it… She’s just gonna have to live with this until… well, until forever I guess. xD;;;

Now to get back to actually working for once. =u=;;;

Philippine Summer Komikon 2012: Aftermath

summer komikon goodies

I had to write about this sooner or later, and it’s better late than never, right? :)

Unlike last Komikon, I didn’t have to bring my books to the event, because both Karma and A.illusions have been published under Oh No! Manga. :D Unfortunately, we had a teeny booth, so Enjelicious and I weren’t really able to do sketch commissions like we planned.

Rei and Flour

I’ll tell you an Oh No! Manga secret: Flour is actually Rei’s beloved daughter. >: And they got separated in Heaven because Rei’s was placed in the guiding humans department and Flour in the letter sorting department, so…

…kidding, I’m kidding! xD;;; They’re from 2 different series, so this is a crossover thingie. >u<;;;

I really love Flour. She’s so adorable and tiny… although Rei’s complaining why Flour’s bigger than her *cough* xDDD;;;

I'm not really sure what's going on with this piece. I just felt like drawing Rei patting Flour on the head. :3a It seemed appropriate somehow~ And as for the subtitle, I’ll let you guys figure out who’s saying that. ♥

Ok, time to get some real work done. xD

Chibi Khyle

Earlier this month, I decided to commission Enjelia to draw me a chibi Khyle. I’ve always adored her style, and I thought Khyle would be a perfect character for her to draw~ ♥

Isn’t he just the most adorable thing you’ve ever laid eyes on? TAT;;; I’ve printed this out and asked her to sign it for me. x3;;; Now all I need is a frame for my Hall of Fame!

Yes, I’m stalling for time on my Komikon report, ahaha… I should get to that and stop being so lazy. =_=;;;

By the way, is it considered to be a “fanart” of your work when you commission the artist to draw for you? :|a

Developing an “Art Style”

a.illusions - kyleI haven’t gone around to writing about Komikon yet because I can’t seem to get into the mood of taking photos of my haul. But I can’t sleep, so I decided to write about another topic.

When Misaki-chan and Suoh-san kidnapped me and I went for coffee, they began a little interview since it was the first we three meet IRL. ^^;;; I’ll admit, it was nerve-wracking, but one question got stuck to my head:

“How did you develop your ‘art style’?”

I was only able to answer with, “well, I don’t think you ‘make’ an art style… it’s just comes to you. My style probably came about because of college…” etc. etc.

I don’t think it was a bad answer, but I do think it was an incomplete answer. So I’d like to further expound on this topic here in my blog.

I’m no expert, and I don’t think my style is all that unique, but it is something I’ve become comfortable with. I believe an art style can only be developed if you’ve tried out as many different styles that you can think of. You may not like the plate-sized eyes older anime’s have used, but I said the same thing about drawing small eyes when I still enjoyed drawing in the same style as Sailor Moon.

Case and point: 2006 and 2012 versions of Rei Hino

All styles have their own strengths and weaknesses. Once you’ve tried them all, you begin to see what you really like and what you don’t. Draw what scares you; draw what you think is impossible for you to master. You’d be surprised with how hard simple things are (like drawing chibi), and how easy difficult things can be (like backgrounds… wait, they’re still hard! orz;;;).

Then you add all the elements you like into one. After attending college and being forced to draw in different styles, I realized several things that I liked when I draw manga:

  • Smaller eyes looked more realistic, and therefore, expressions seem more realistic and easier to relate to.
  • I like artworks with detailed hair.
  • I have a pet-peeve with drawing hands. They really need to look good or at the very least, decent.
  • Anatomy is a continued really process, and despite the exaggerated anatomy that you can get away with in anime, I prefer “somewhat” realistic proportions.

I’m not saying these are rules for you to follow. I’m not saying these observations are correct either. These are my rules. You need to make you own. There are no real rules on art, there are guidelines. But even so, both rules and guidelines are meant to be broken. They change continually as you develop.

One last thing… if you really want to make your own style, then practice, practice, practice! Draw what you enjoy drawing and not what you think others will. When someone gives you “expert critiques”, listen to them with a grain of salt. If it makes sense to change something they pointed out, then do it. If it doesn’t, (and this is the most difficult thing to do) then don’t pay them any attention. Usually, those “experts” don’t even know how to draw anyway. xD

Because really, at the end of the day? If your happy with your work, then that’s all that really matters.

Keep drawing everyone. :) Stay happy! ♥

EDIT 2012.06.01: A word from Miss Joanah Calingo:

For major influence, I fused the look from these -->

Now that's out of the way, for me, a style is a combination of all the visual elements that you like + your skill. Basically, it’s the flavor of your art. I guess there are many ways for you to land on the “final” look that you like. While you're in the process of developing your style, you pick up the aesthetic choices (or the look) of the artists you admire. There are certain elements in their art that you like. Those visual elements, combined with the artist's skill, tends to influence the way you do your art, trying to "emulate" them in the process.

The only advice I can give is to expose yourself to as many artists as you can, and then learn tips to make your art look better (what makes their art/look tick), but never aim to look exactly like the influence. Just aim to be as good in skill, and eventually you'll grow out of the idol's shadow come out with something uniquely yours.
